The Australian dollar depreciated past $0.64, hitting new five-month lows as a wave of risk-off trades took over financial markets following reports that Israel targeted sites in Iran, Iraq and Syria in retaliation to Tehran’s weekend attack against Israel over the weekend. The aussie also came under pressure from hawkish Federal Reserve commentary which raised fears about the possibility of no rate reductions at all this year. In Australia, markets are betting that the central bank will start lowering rates late this year. Investors digested data showing the country's unemployment rate edged up to 3.8% in March from 3.7% in February, supporting a dovish view on domestic monetary policy. However, a Westpac report said that although the Reserve Bank of Australia signaled rates won’t likely be hiked further, it needs more confidence about the inflation outlook to consider the case for rate cuts.
