The HCOB Italy Manufacturing PMI decreased to 47.3 in April 2024, down from 50.4 in the previous month and falling short of the market consensus of 50.0. The latest reading fell back into contraction territory after only a brief period of slight growth, as both new orders and output contracted sharply. In addition, the pace of job creation eased slightly, although it remained solid overall, while the rate at which backlogged work was depleted was sharp, marking the strongest seen in five months. On the price front, input costs rose for the first time since January 2023, while selling prices remained little-changed, with some firms discounting charges to encourage sales. Finally, business confidence hit a year high, underpinned by predictions that new orders would pick up and economic conditions would improve.
