Equities in New Zealand fell 46 points or 0.4% to 11,826 on Friday morning trade after gaining in the prior session, mainly dragged by tech, financials, and consumer durables. The fresh economic data pressured sentiment after the business performance in New Zealand continued to shrink for the 14th straight month due to a renewed contraction in new orders. Capping the fall was an upbeat session on Wall Street overnight, with S&P and Nasdaq hitting a new record high for a 4th straight session overnight, as softer-than-expected US inflation raised bets the Fed to cut rates this year. New Zealand food inflation eased to 0.2% in May 2002, the lowest since September 2018. For the week, the NZE 50 is heading for a 0.3% drop, which would be the 2nd straight weekly decline, as traders questioned Chinese economic recovery after producer prices in the mainland continued to fall. Early losers were Vulcan Steel (-3.7%), followed by ANZ Group (-1.9%) and Auckland International Airport (-1.1%).
