The S&P/TSX Composite index hovered above the flatline at the 22,250 mark on Wednesday, buoyed by expectations of rate cuts by the US Fed in September, although gains were tempered by equities tied to oil. The financial and tech sectors led the index, fueled by softer-than-expected US CPI data favoring doves in the Federal Reserve. Element Financial and Celestica both gained nearly 5%. Conversely, declining oil prices weighed on key players, with Imperial Oil dropping 1.6%, while Suncor, Canadian Natural Resources, and Cenovus each lost 1.4% and 1.2% respectively. Housing starts for April totaled 240,200, down from 242,300 the previous year, while manufacturing sales in March fell by 2.1%, primarily due to decreased sales of petroleum, coal products, and motor vehicles.
