The BSE Sensex rose about 0.2% to settle at 76,992.8 on Friday, a fresh record high, extending gains for the third session. The auto index had gained the most, followed by consumer durables stocks, while the bank and financial services indices had also gained substantially. On the domestic economic front, India's retail inflation hit a 12-month low in May, staying within the RBI’s tolerance for the ninth successive month. Meanwhile, traders contended with weak global cues influenced by expectations of fewer US rate cuts this year, alongside ongoing trade tensions and political turmoil in France. For the week, the Sensex added 0.4%, notching its second consecutive weekly gain, driven by state-run firms and banks, on hopes of policy continuity in terms of focus on infrastructure and consumption after key ministers were retained in the new government's cabinet. Indian markets will be closed on Monday, June 17th, for a local holiday, with trade set to resume on June 18th.
