The Nikkei 225 Index fell 0.4% to below 38,600 while the broader Topix Index lost 0.1% to 2,730 on Friday, with Japanese shares sliding for the fourth straight session as caution prevailed ahead of the Bank of Japan’s latest policy decision. The BOJ is widely expected to leave interest rates unchanged, but traders will focus on whether the central bank will announce a reduction in its monthly bond purchases. However, former BOJ board member Takahide Kiuchi said the bank is likely to maintain its flexible bond purchase program as a “fine-tuning tool” to allow itself the ability to combat both upside and downside risks to growth and inflation. Meanwhile, major US indexes notched new record closes overnight as the latest US PPI data added to further signs of easing inflation. Notable losses were seen from index heavyweights such as Toyota Motor (-1%), Fast Retailing (-1.3%) and Mitsubishi UFJ (-0.5%). The benchmark indexes are on track to end the week lower.
