The Nikkei 225 Index rose 0.24% to close at 38,814 while the broader Topix Index gained 0.54% to 2,747 on Friday, reversing losses from earlier in the session as the Bank of Japan decided to keep interest rates unchanged in June as widely expected, after conducting its first rate hike in seven years at the March meeting. The BOJ also said it will buy Japanese government bonds at the current pace and would decide on how to trim bond purchases at the next policy meeting in July, defying market expectations that it will announce a reduction of its huge bond buying this month. Externally, Japanese shares tracked gains on Wall Street as cooler-than-expected US inflation figures kept hopes for multiple US rate cuts alive. Technology stocks led the advance, with strong gains from Disco Corp (2.3%), SoftBank Group (3.4%) and Renesas Electronics (2.4%). The Nikkei 225 Index advanced 0.34% this week, while the Topix Index lost 0.31%.
