Imports to Taiwan grew 0.2% year-on-year to USD 31.31 billion in May 2024, sharply easing from a 6.6% rise in the previous month and well below market estimates of a 6% increase. The broad slowdown was prompted by the decreases in purchases of mineral products (-7.2%) and machinery (-11.9%), but was slightly more than offset by higher arrivals of information, communication and audio-video products (40.5%), parts of electronics (23%), and base metals (16.1%). Among main suppliers, imports rose from ASEAN countries (18%), and China & Hong Kong (8.5%), while purchases went down from the US (-28.3%), Middle East (-8.9%), Japan (-6.3%), and Europe (-2.6%). Considering January to May, imports were 3.2% higher compared to the same period in the prior year.
