Thailand's industrial production unexpectedly rose 3.43% from a year earlier in April 2024, easily beating market expectations of a 1.1% drop while shifting from a 5.13% fall in the previous month. It was the first growth in 19 months, amid economic recovery momentum and the effect of a low base year. There were upturns in the production of rubber & plastic products (1.9% vs -4.6% in March), computers & peripherals (4.6% vs -18.9%), foods (9.8% vs -0.7%), and apparel, except for garment stores (2.4% vs -5.5%). Also, the output of refining products grew further (4.8% vs 5.3%). Simultaneously, output shrank much softer for cars (-6.8% vs -22.6%) and basic iron & steel (-3.5% vs -8.8%) but remained weak for electronic components & boards (-17.2% vs -15.3%), On a monthly basis, industrial activity plunged 13.4% in April, the first decline in four months and the steepest fall since December 2011.
