European stocks extended their mid-session slump to close sharply lower on Tuesday amid pressure from underwhelming corporate earnings and increasingly hawkish expectations for the Federal Reserve, while markets digested a batch of key data from the Eurozone. The Stoxx 50 sank 1.2% to 4,921 and the Stoxx 600 dropped 0.6% to 505. The Euro Area’s GDP expanded by 0.3% from the previous quarter in Q1, firmly above market expectations of 0.1%, while the inflation refrained from slowing for the first time this year and the core gauge eased less than expected. Still, Governing Council members indicated they are still set for a June cut. The auto sector took the spotlight on the corporate front, with Stellantis, Mercedes, and Volkswagen plummeting between 11 and 5% after the three giants delivered lower sales in the first quarter of the year. Banks were also at investors’ forefront, with Santander dropping 4% despite posting a profit growth, mirroring developments from rival BBVA yesterday.
