European stocks swung to losses on Tuesday as the market reacted to a large batch of key economic data and corporate earnings, with the Eurozone’s Stoxx 50 dropping 0.5% to the 4,950 mark. New data showed that the Euro Area’s GDP expanded by 0.3% from the previous quarter in Q1, firmly above market expectations of 0.1%, while the bloc’s inflation refrained from slowing and held at 2.4%. The data supported hawks in the ECB’s Governing Council, aligning with Vice President de Guindo’s warning of upside inflation risks for the year. The auto sector took the spotlight on the corporate front, with Stellantis, Mercedes, and Volkswagen all dropping more than 2% after the three giants delivered lower sales in the first quarter of the year. Banks were also at investors’ forefront, with Santander dropping 2.3% despite posting a profit growth, mirroring developments from rival BBVA yesterday. Tech giants also traded lower, with ASML and SAP dropping close to 1% each.
