The Taiwanese economy expanded 6.51% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2024, accelerating from a 4.93% growth in the previous period, preliminary estimates showed. It marked the strongest economic expansion since the second quarter of 2021, driven by a further increase in government spending (1.26% vs 0.02% in Q4). Additionally, next external demand contributed positively to the GDP growth, as exports surged 10.21% (vs 3.72%), while imports rose at a softer 2.16% (vs -4.48%). At the same time, gross capital formation declined less (-4.47% vs -9.06%), and household consumption grew at a softer pace (4.14% vs 5.07%). On a seasonally adjusted quarterly basis, the GDP went up 0.28%, slowing from a robust 2.34% expansion in the prior quarter.
