The seasonally adjusted estimate for total dwellings approved in Australia increased by 1.9% month-on-month to 12,947 units in March 2024, reversing from an upwardly revised 0.9% fall in February but missing market expectations for a 3% gain, preliminary data showed. It marked the strongest growth in five months, with private sector houses (3.8%) and private sector dwellings excluding houses (3.6%) both posting strong gains. On a geographical basis, total dwellings rose in Victoria (3.2%) and Western Australia (1.5%), while falling in Tasmania (-18.1%), South Australia (-7%), Queensland (-5.2%) and New South Wales (-1.2%).
