The value of new home loans for owner-occupied homes in Australia grew by 2.8% month-on-month to A$ 17.48 billion in March 2024, easily exceeding market forecasts of 1.0% and accelerating from a marginally revised 1.5% rise in the prior month. The purchase of existing dwellings accelerated (3.5% vs 1.4%) while construction of dwellings rebounded (3.2% vs -1.7%). However, the purchase of newly erected dwellings fell 5.1% after increasing 6.2% previously. Geographical-wise, new home loans increased in most states and territories: New South Wales (2.4%), Victoria (2.0%), Queensland (5.6%), South Australia (2.8%), West Australia (6.3%), Tasmania (17.8%), and Northern Territory (13.6%). Conversely, they plunged in the Australian Capital Territory (-19.2%). On an annual basis, the value of new home loans jumped by 11.4%.
