The S&P Global France Manufacturing PMI fell to 45.3 in April of 2024 from 46.2 in March, revised slightly up from the preliminary reading of 44.9. This marked the 15th consecutive month of contraction in France's factory activity, the fastest decline since January. The primary reason behind April's stronger decline was a steep and accelerated fall in new orders, which constrained French goods production. Firms reported lower appetite from clients in key domestic industries such as construction and transport. Export demand was also subdued, particularly from customers in the US, Mexico, Germany, and certain parts of North Africa. At the same time, workforce numbers declined further, although the rate of job shedding was the softest for ten months. Purchasing activity decreased as well. Input price inflation reached 14-month highs due to rising material costs, while selling charges fell for the eleventh straight month. On a positive note, growth expectations rose to a one-year high.
